Nine schools signed up to compete in the Great Southwestern Math Contest
inSpring 2005. The schools included Las Cruces High, Mayfield, Onate,
Carrizozo High,Hobbs, Ruidoso, Gadsden, El Paso High and Sierra Middle
schools. Although not all
the schools were able to participate in this year’s contest, on Tuesday,
April 12, at4:00 p.m., thirty-two teams of high school students logged
in to WEB-CT to answer thecontest questions. There were 25 fun and
challenging mathematics problems on the
Great Southwestern Math Contest. Each team consisted of three (or fewer)
students,who worked together to solve as many problems as they could
in a 2 12hour timeperiod. One team from El Paso High School won top
ranking, while three teams from
Las Cruces High School won second place and tied for third place. Mayfield
HighSchool and Onate High School teams tied for fourth place. There
was an AwardsCeremony for the winning teams on Thursday, April 28,
in Science Hall. Members of
the first place team received software donated by MacKichan Software,
Inc.; all othercontestants on teams that placed received a book on
mathematics. The Department ofMathematical Sciences at NMSU started
this contest in Spring 2002.
