Olympic Rings

In this assignment we will learn one method for drawing the symbol of the Olympic Games. The instructions below will make rings that have an outer radius of 3 centimeters and an inner radius of 2.5 centimeters.

  1. Draw a line segment 12 or more centimeters long. Mark 5 points on the segment each 3.2 centimeters from the next. (Make them small, but large enough to see; the picture below exaggerates their size.)

  2. Draw circles of radius three centimeters centered at the first, third, and fifth points. These circles will just miss passing through the second and fourth points.

  3. Draw two lines perpendicular to the original line and passing through the second and fourth points, respectively. Mark points on each of these new lines 3 centimeters below the original line. Then draw circles of radii 3 centimeters centered at these points.

  4. Erase the lines to get a cleaner picture. At each of the five centers draw a circle of radius 2.5 centimeters. Making the radii less than 2.5 cm will give you thicker rings and radii of more than 2.5 cm will give thinner rings. Do not make the radii of the inner circles too small else you will not have space in between two intersecting rings.

  5. Erase the centers of the circles and color the rings. Keep in mind that there is an alternating pattern of the overlaps of the rings. Starting at 9:00 on the yellow ring, it goes over the blue ring, then under the blue, then over the black, and finally under the black. The green ring has the same pattern of overlaps.
