What is my Grade?

Students often ask their teachers what is their grade in a course and what do they need on the final to get a certain grade. In this assignment you will work through calculations that will answer these questions for our course.

Recall that the grade for our course is based on the following breakdown:

Assignments 25%      Visitations 5%
Quizzes 15%      Midterms 30%
Attendance 5%      Final Exam 20%

Problem 1. Calculate the total percentage for a student with the following grades:

Assignments 90%      First Midterm Exam 75%
Quizzes 90%      Second Midterm Exam 80%
Attendance 90%      Final 80%
Visitations 100%

Problem 2. Using the data of the previous problem, calculate the student's percentage if, instead,

  1. the assignment average is 70% and all other scores are the same,
  2. the first midterm exam is 95% and all other scores are the same.

Problem 3. If there are 10 assignments during the semester, how much of an affect on your final percentage will missing an assignment versus getting 100% on the assignment?

Problem 4. Suppose that, up to the final, a student's grades are

Assignments 85%      First Midterm Exam 75%
Quizzes 90%      Second Midterm Exam 90%
Attendance 100%      Visitations 100%

What does the student need on the final to get 90% for the entire course, or is this impossible? What do they need on the final to get 85%? What does the student need on the final to guarantee a B for the class? To answer these questions, find a simple equation that allows you to calculate the score you must get on the final for any possible final percentage.
